Story Republic

A community page kept readable after it closed

  • Archive
  • Static HTML
  • No CMS to lapse

Skills

  • Content migration
  • Static HTML
  • Preservation

A frozen snapshot of a retired storytelling community, rebuilt as static HTML so what it gathered stays reachable.

Challenge

Story Republic ran as a peer-to-peer community of storytellers, and then it stopped. The page it lived on was built in Carrd, on a subscription, and a site like that does not fade when it lapses, it goes: the testimonials, the founder's letter and everything people wrote about what the practice did for them all leave at the same moment. There was no CMS to export and nothing to inherit.

Action

I took the page exactly as it stood and rebuilt it as static HTML, so it depends on nothing that can lapse. No CMS, no subscription, no build step to rot. The type, the spacing and the photographs are the originals; the only thing that changed is what it costs to keep them online.

Result

The community's own account of itself outlives the community. The invitation that gathered people, the participants' own words and the founder's letter are all still readable, at an address that needs nothing from anyone to stay up.
